Eagles的歌大都出自于Don Henley、Glen Frey之手，他们两人是乐队的核心人物，也是自始至终唯一坚守自己岗位的老成员。Don Henley曾是Shiloh的一员，1970年发行了一张同名专辑，为他们制作唱片的正是大名鼎鼎的Kenny Rogers。来自底特律的Glen Frey是为了追求J.D.Souther的妹妹，才来到加州闯天下的。1968年他于Souther组成了一个二重唱，此时关系于他们很接近的还有Jackson Browne，因为这层情谊的关系，所以我们可以发现不少Eagles的作品，有J.D. Souther和Jackson Browne名字出现。
组成Eagles的构想人是Don Henley和Glen Frey，他们在吟游诗人俱乐部里相识，随即他们加入Linda Ronstadt的乐队里。除了Henley和Frey之外，Randy Meisner和Bernie Leadon以“客座”的身份也被邀请在Linda的班底，他们四人在此风云际会，短短四个月时间，竟在小伙子们满腔热血的促动下，Eagles应运而生了!
1971年8月四个已有丰富舞台经验的乐手，包括Gleen Frey,Bernie Leadon,Randy Meisner和Don Henley组成The Eagles。
在为琳达朗丝黛(Linda Ronstadt)担任专属乐团后，受到Asylum唱片公司总裁David Geffen的提拔，安排其于科罗拉多Aspen一家俱乐部中担任一晚四场的演出达一个月。
1972年4月和Asylum唱片签约，The Eagles飞往英国轮敦奥林匹克录音室进行第一章唱片录制工作。在七月份的时候，Take It Easy成为他们第一首近榜单曲。而收录该曲的专辑The Eagles获第二十二名。选自专辑中的另一首歌Witchy Woman晋升到第九名。乐团的成员或多或少有了些改变，但是老鹰合唱团一直在发展中。1973年乐队所属的唱片公司被华纳公司收购，华纳公司是当今国际五大唱片集团之一，也是全球最具实力的影视制作公司，他在八十年代时曾有意与宝利金（Polygram)公司合并，但由于美国反托拉斯法的制约而未能成功。雄鹰乐队由于有如此强大的宣传后盾，乐队的成功也接踵而至，各地的巡回演出搞得风风火火。
早期作品略带灰色

不可否认的是Eagles早期的作品稍微带了点灰色，他们常靠着各种**来寻求内心的平静，最常看到他们在歌曲中所引用的方式，便是在异性中寻找自我。
进身超级乐队行列
1974年对Eagles来说是变化最大的一年，这一年他们会到洛杉机录制唱片。Don Felder的加入使得Eagles阵容更为强大，该团成了名副其实的"五重奏"。同年四月当On The Border推出之后，Eagles更往前迈进了一步，进入了超级乐队的行列:这张专辑为他们在格莱美奖中获得两项提名。

正值Eagles顶峰时期，Bernie Leadon突然离去，Eagles组团之初，Bernie Leadon，Randy Meisner一直是被看好的两为台柱，“Desperado”以后，Glen Frey和Don Henley表现的愈来愈称职，逐渐成为乐队的发言人，后来Leadon因为与其他成员不睦，甚至于有被忽视的感觉，所以才会造成这种局面。
至此乐队便成为美国第一流的超级乐队，以后的每张唱片都远远超过100万张的销量。1976年乐队的一张精选唱片还未发行便有了100万张的订单。
创下一连串佳绩
1976年到1980年是The Eagles辉煌年代，唱片叫好又叫座，获奖不记其数。
1976年，Eagles写下一个历史记录，他们的集锦专辑Greatest Hits，成了唱片史上第三张未发行就有100万张订单的专辑。
那张Hotel California专辑，在1977年一月获美国排行榜冠军一周，销售达白金唱片。这支同名单曲在二月及三月分别重回冠军宝座，而后更在四月底和五月初禅联冠军达五周之久，并同时获英国亚军。五月时，专辑同名单曲Hotel California销售百万，获美国榜冠军军。
接替Leadon位置的是James Gang的吉他手Joe Walsh，由于他的加入，Eagles的乐风更加摇滚化了。Hotel California可说是Eagles在最佳状态，最佳组合之下所完成的一张旷世之作，它的销售量在80年代初就已突破1500万张!
70年代中期，Eagles发行的三张专辑都荣登排行的榜首。分别是1975年7月26日得到5周冠军的One of These Night，1976年3月31日也得到5周冠军的Greatest Hits，及1977年1月15日得到8周冠军的Hotel California。
到1978年2月23日，以Hotel California获第二十届葛来美年度最佳歌曲。该张专专辑中另一首歌New Kids In Town获最佳和声编排。
这里不得不提一下Eagles获得评价与呼声最高的那首“Hotel California”了，它的特殊之处在于Don Felder与Joe Walsh所搭配出的双吉他效果，另外，歌曲故事本身也很玄，字里行间洋溢着神秘的气氛，歌中唱到:任何人来到加州旅馆没有不受欢迎的，但是这里却有个规矩，只收旅客，不放走客人，任何时间你都可以结帐，只是你出不了大门。主唱Don Henley在这张唱片中的表现让人不得不刮目相看，8首歌Don Henley就主唱了5首，他在乐队中的份量可想而知了。
“老鹰”折翼，成员单飞
Don Henley与Glen Frey愈是抢眼，Randy Meisner这位创团元老就愈显得黯然失色，1977年Meisner也决意离去。1978年12月23日，Eagles在第20届格莱美奖中获两项奖，但是Eagles却没有参加这个盛会，原因是他们认为此奖不够真实而有虚伪之感，他们的才华不需要格莱美奖来认定，唱片销路好，演唱会卖座就已经得到大家的肯定了。
花了18个月的时间才完成了专辑The Long Run的工作，Eagles真可说是跑了很长一段时间才有新作推出，但谁又知道录制的工作是在成员争论不休的情形下进行的，所以从这张专辑的气势看，的确比以往几张逊色了许多，喜欢他们的歌迷依然主动去接受这张新作，因此受欢迎程度亦不比以往差。The Long Run于1979年11月3日蝉联专辑榜达8周之久，节奏感非常强烈的单曲“Heartache Tonight”也非常流行。于1977年9月才加入的新手Tebothy B. Schmit，以前曾在Poco呆了7年之久，这次与Eagles合作唱了一首慢板抒情佳作“I Can't Tell You Why”，果然给歌迷另一种清新的感受。
由于格伦弗雷（Glenn Frey）和唐亨利（Don Henley）这两位乐队中心人物的不和，使乐队处在一个名存实亡的状态，各成员间也矛盾重重。而唐亨利由于私生活不检点而被课以重罚及判缓刑2年。
1980年专辑同名单曲The Long Run获得美国榜第八名，而其实老鹰合唱团在八零年代时就已经渐渐隐没了。所有团员皆同意在专辑The Long Run录毕之后解散。
The Long Run推出后，Eagles因为Don Henley与Glen Frey的不合而名存实亡了。他们的制作人Bill Szymcz于1980年7月在长堤体育场为他们举办了一场演唱会，没想到这真的成了Eagles散席前的最后一次聚合，Bill很感慨地对那个夜晚说了一句“Long Night at Wrong Beach”!
1981年2月Seven Bridges Road获美国榜第21名，同时亦为老鹰合唱团团最后后一首美国榜上单曲。此时所有团员皆已展开个人事业，其中以Frey和Henley最有成就。
重出江湖：
合久必分，分久必合。94年Don Henley，Glen Frey，Don Felder，Joe Walsh，Tebothy B. Schmit又走到了一起，全球的鹰迷兴奋不已，终于等到了期待已久的声音。
1994年3月，老鹰合唱团向全世界宣告：将于五月展开他们的北美巡回演唱行程。消息传出后，歌迷当然是欢喜欲狂。
4月25，26日14年来第一场老鹰演唱会，由MTV取得独家录影权，定于1994年夏天播出，并将这场现场的精华收录成94年最新专辑。五月底，以洛杉机为宣布重组的世界巡回演唱会起点。25万张票在数小时内即抢购一空 ，票价最高哄抬到115元美金一张。出现在观众席上的，还包括麦克尼克生和雪儿等影视红星，是为该年度唯一乐评及票房双重得利峰头最健的演唱会。而在11月8日，暌达14年的最新专辑Hell Freezes Over全球同步发行，收录最新作品以及11首94年现场演唱版的经典名曲演唱。现在The Eagles的专辑依然继续销售中。
